His introduction to people with intellectual/developmental disabilities was in 2003 when he was hired to work as a caregiver in a group home for a non-profit organization. He discovered immediately that he loved caring for and interacting with the residents and was inspired to pursue a career in the Human Services field.
Mr. Mekonnen has held various positions, including Regional Director of a 24-hour residential care facility for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities, Program Manager and Residential Manager.
In 2017, Mr. Mekonnen saw the need for adult foster care in Multnomah County for individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, which inspired him to open his first care home.
His experience working closely with County Services Coordinators, Program Managers, and the families and Guardians of clients in residential facilities, has given him a deeper understanding of the funding system and its functioning in the Human Services field.
